How to treat insomnia in dogs

Among the most common sleep disorders in dogs, we find the following: insomnia. Unlike people, they do not suffer from chronic insomnia, but it can occur due to some physical or psychological factors. This problem seriously affects your health and causes symptoms such as anxiety or apathy. Therefore, it is important that we quickly recognize the cause and act.

It is estimated that a healthy middle-aged dog sleeps about ten hours a night, although he also rests for several hours during the day while awake. However, there are factors that can alter your sleep cycle. One of them is pain caused by a health problem, such as arthritis. For this reason, it is recommended to visit the veterinarian regularly to find out about the animal's health.

Lack of exercise is also a common cause. A sedentary life means that the dog does not need a long rest at night. The solution is based on walking the dog three times a day, encouraging him to walk and balance his energy.

Another common cause is poor diet. Heavy meals cause difficult digestion as well as severe pain and discomfort. If we notice that our dog does not sleep well, it is better to check the food doses that we offer him daily, especially at dinner time.

Age is also a key factor. Puppies sleep less time due to their high energy levels, which should not be a problem if they have a proper rest schedule as they reach puberty. Conversely, older dogs can also suffer from sleep disorders for various reasons. Among them, lack of bladder control.

We can take some simple steps to help our pet sleep, such as making him a comfortable and soft bed, giving him a massage before bed or playing soft music (piano and harp are said to relax dogs). . If we see that the problem persists, it is necessary to seek the help of a specialist.
